Studio News – Summer 2014

Counting Crows recently released the first song, Palisades Park, off their new record Somewhere Under Wonderland. The album was mixed here at the Magic Shop by producer/engineer Brian Deck with Kabir Hermon assisting. It is set to be released September 2, 2014.

Nora Guthrie has been hard at work putting together an incredible 3CD enhanced audiobook chronicling the time her father, Woody Guthrie, spent in New York City. The audiobook, My Name is New York, will be released in September and has been featured in Rolling Stone and the Wall Street Journal. The project was produced by Steve Rosenthal, Michael Kleff and Nora Guthrie, recorded and mixed at the Magic Shop by Brian Thorn and Kabir Hermon, and mastered at the shop by Jessica Thompson and Warren Russell-Smith.

Sony has announced Elvis Presley’s That’s The Way It Is Legacy Edition. The release is a deluxe box set comprised of 2 DVDs including the full theatrical version of the movie as well rehearsal footage and 8 CDs including six full concerts from the International Hotel in Las Vegas mixed by Steve Rosenthal and staff engineer Kabir Hermon with Producers Ernst Jorgensen and Rob Santos. The box is set to be released August 5, 2014.

Studio friends Blonde Redhead have released two songs off their next record, Barragàn, which comes out on September 2, 2014. The album was recorded at the Magic Shop by producer Drew Brown with engineer Kabir Hermon and assistant engineer Sean Gavigan.

We were happy to have The Gaslight Anthem in the studio to track and mix the B-sides for their new record with Ted Young assisted by Chris Shurtleff.

Austrailian singer-songwriter Vance Joy was at the Magic Shop to work on a track for his upcoming record Dream Your Life Away. The session was produced by Ryan Hadlock and assisted by Kabir Hermon.

Drew Brown was also in the studio with Steve Rosenthal favorite Foxygen. The band was working on mixes for their next release. Drew was assisted by engineers Kabir Hermon and Chris Shurtleff.

Mastering and Restoration News

In the Blue Room, Jessica Thompson has been busy mastering reissues and brand new records, including Liital, a blazing recording from the 1990s by Senegalese singer Aby Ngana Diop on the always excellent label Awesome Tapes From Africa; the debut album by End of Love, mixed by Ted Young and featuring members of Wilco and Big Star; Ellen Sundberg’s sweet and lovely EP Headlights (as well as her upcoming full length album); bluegrass singer Jen Larson’s soon to be released EP, featuring some of the best pickers in the NYC area and produced by the multi-talented guitarist, singer and music teacher Michael Daves; and singer-songwriter Mark Sebastian’s new record The Real Story, produced by Jimi Zhivago.
